Abel Tesfaye, better known as the Weeknd, has spent $70 million on a luxurious Bel Air mansion, resulting in one of the largest real estate transactions consummated in Los Angeles this year.

Dutch media entrepreneur Reinout Oerlemans and his wife Danielle Oerlemans said they had no intention of selling their recently renovated property until Beverly Hills Estates real estate agents Rayni and Branden Williams approached them about showing it to the music superstar.

Danielle Oerlemans supervised the property’s total redesign. There are orange walls and a black stone fireplace in the living room.

Ms. Williams stated that she knew Mr. Tesfaye was looking for a new residence and that she believed this property would meet all of his requirements. She stated that the Oerlemanses initially resisted, but eventually came around. The property was sold in a private transaction.

The approximately 33,000-square-foot mansion on approximately 1.6 acres overlooking the prestigious Bel-Air Country Club has nine bedrooms and a variety of amenities, including a sports court, a spa with a sauna, a hammam, an indoor pool, an outdoor infinity pool with a waterfall, a movie theater, a gym, and a music studio.

The property is sophisticated and dramatic. It features a spacious living and entertaining area with spray-painted orange high-gloss walls and a black fireplace, an industrial-style office, and a formal dining room with a fireplace and coffered ceilings. Copper cabinets with leather belt pulls are installed in the kitchen.

The Oerlemans recently completed an approximately three-year renovation of their home, which they purchased for $21.4 million in 2015. Mr. Oerlemans stated that the home’s interior design was “horrendous” when they purchased it, but he saw good bones and liked the location.

Ms. Oerlemans completely redesigned the interior, collaborating with one of her favorite interior designers and importing modern furniture from all over the globe, including their native Netherlands. They expanded the property by approximately 13,000 square feet to accommodate the spa and other amenities.

Mr. Oerlemans stated he has spent 25 years in the media and entertainment industry. In Europe, he began his career as an actor and television presenter before transitioning to directing and producing. In 2001, he established his own production company, Eyeworks, which he sold to Warner Bros. in 2014. Ms. Oerlemans was a competitive cyclist in the past.

Earlier this year, Madonna purchased Mr. Tesfaye’s former property in the Hidden Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles for nearly $20 million, according to a person familiar with the transaction.

Mr. Tesfaye’s representative was not immediately available for comment. Ms. Williams stated that the musician is represented by Beverly Hills Estates’ Angel Salvador.

Mr. Tesfaye, who was raised in Canada by Ethiopian parents, ascended to prominence in the middle of the 2010s. His most popular songs are “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blinding Lights.”
