Unraveling The Weeknd’s Bel-Air Mansion: A Celestial Abode of Luxury and Surprise

The latest entry in the Sam Levinson Cinematic Universe, The Idol, has been generating buzz since its premiere on June 4th. Among the many intriguing aspects of the show is the magnificent mansion that serves as the home base for pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp. What makes it even more fascinating is that the mansion belongs to an actual pop star – The Weeknd, who co-created the show alongside Depp.

Confirmed by Architectural Digest, the 33,000-square-foot Bel Air estate featured in the show is indeed The Weeknd’s real-life residence. The pop star has owned the sprawling property since 2021, acquiring it for a whopping $70 million. Overlooking the Bel Air Country Club, the house boasts stunning columns, glass elements, and lavish amenities. It includes a recording studio, movie theater, infinity pool with a waterfall, and even a Turkish bath, which can be seen when Depp and her co-star Jennie unwind with a sauna session after an intense dance rehearsal.

The decision to shoot in The Weeknd’s actual home was not only an artistic choice but also a commercial one. With extensive reshoots on the horizon after original director Amy Seimetz’s departure and reported changes to the series’ tone, Levinson sought ways to save money. Sitting in The Weeknd’s impressive residence, he realized the production design was unparalleled and proposed shooting the show there. The Weeknd agreed, and Levinson and his family essentially moved into the house to complete the series.

In an attempt to blur the line between fiction and reality, Levinson and his team repurposed the rooms, turning bedrooms into greenrooms and bathrooms into hair and makeup areas. They even built a music studio in the basement for composing the show’s score. For The Weeknd, returning to the house after shooting was a strange experience. He had made changes to the furniture and walls, transforming it back into his personal space.

The mansion plays a significant role in the pilot episode, with various scenes taking place throughout the stunning property. From strategic discussions by the pool to elegant walk-and-talks in the white hallways, the house provides a luxurious backdrop. It also features shots of Jocelyn in what appears to be the master bedroom, and her dancers rehearse choreography in the yard. As The Idol progresses, the mansion could symbolize a gilded cage for Jocelyn, representing the trappings of celebrity and the control exerted over her.

Despite a dysfunctional production process, The Idol has managed to assemble an impressive supporting cast, including talented newcomers and established names from both the acting and music industries.
