Casa Dos Aguas: J Balvin’s Serene Retreat Blending Japanese Elegance and Colombian Charm

Casa Dos Aguas, designed by 5 Solidos for Colombian music icon J Balvin, places a strong emphasis on reflection, serenity, and a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

Inspired by the openness and flow of Japanese architecture, Balvin chose to build this residence in Llanogrande, Colombia, just 30 minutes outside of Medellín. For the Latin Grammy-winning musician, the philosophy of “less is more” prevails in designing a home that brings ease and comfort rather than catering to ego.

The original design of the house, known as “House of the Waters,” remains intact in 5 Solidos’ creation for J Balvin. Two parallel rooms connected by a wooden hallway with abundant natural light and a lofty pitched ceiling make up the core of the home. The exterior plan was later added as a second phase, allowing the breathtaking mountain ranges of Colombia to take center stage.

This residence beautifully combines Scandinavian charm and Japanese simplicity, marrying lightness and materiality with harmony and poise. The house is characterized by its straightforward, modest, and well-designed features, featuring bonsai and warm oak wood adorning the floors, walls, and pitched ceilings.

As an avid art and design collector, J Balvin has curated his home with care and thoughtfulness. Thonet dining chairs, Vibia lights illuminating the space, and Mattiazzi Osso stools are among the carefully chosen pieces that invite guests to sit and enjoy the space.

The attention to detail extends throughout the entire home, from the artwork on the walls to the books on the shelves, all showcased in a neutral palette. Every aspect of the design sparks a dialogue with the space, creating moments of awe and a sense of unity and balance, as noted by the architects from 5 Solidos.
