Inside Lewis Hamilton’s Opulent NYC Lifestyle: A Peek into His $50MDouble Apartment Splurge

Formula One racecar driver Lewis Hamilton, one of the wealthiest athletes in the world, with an estimated annual income of close to $50 million, caught a classic case of Real Estate Fickle almost immediately after purchasing a Manhattan triplex penthouse for $44 million in early 2017.

The recently knighted 36-year-old Brit, who won the inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last week and will start this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the coveted pole position as the odds-on favorite, never even moved into the 8,900-square-foot Tribeca abode before he purchased another outrageously expensive penthouse just a block away and flipped the unwanted triplex back on the market just two years ago for $57 million.

With no bidders at the astronomical price, the asking price was reduced to $52 million before a wealthy buyer paid $49.5 million for the six-bedroom, six-full-and-two-and-a-half-bath residence, the highest price paid this year for a downtown condominium. According to the New York Post, the buyer’s identity is concealed behind an LLC with a Seattle address, and there is a great deal of unsubstantiated speculation that the new proprietor is a tech titan such as Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos.

A separate elevator services the three floors of the penthouse, which has a double-height corner living room with exposed wood support beams and a 20-foot ceiling and an elevator that enters directly into the foyer. The separate kitchen is organized around a large island with two dishwashers and features high-end finishes and every culinary amenity that $50 million can purchase.

On the second level are three or possibly four guest chambers, as well as a master suite with a private study, a morning bar, and a walk-in closet, according to the floor plans. The opulent, windowless ensuite of the master bedroom has pristine lines but is extravagant. A den adjacent to the living room on the main level has an attached bathroom, making it readily convertible into a sixth bedroom.

The upper floor features an expansive lounge with a wet bar and a powder room. The lounge opens through walls of accordion-fold glass doors to two terraces, the larger of which is a vast wrap-around affair with panoramic views of the city and river. The unit comes with two deeded parking spaces in a secured on-site garage. It is unclear whether a plunge pool has been constructed, despite marketing materials claiming otherwise.
