Jason Derulo: From Struggles to TikTok Stardom and Real Estate Investments

Jason Derulo faced a period of struggle a couple of years ago, despite his previous success with multiple singles like “It Girl,” “Trumpets,” and “Whatcha Say” in the late 2000s and early 2010s. For five years, he failed to achieve a top 20 position on the Billboard Hot 100. In May 2020, Derulo departed from Warner Bros., citing “creative differences,” following the poor reception of his 2019 “2Sides” EP. Many wondered if the 30-year-old artist’s career was over.

Amidst the pandemic, Derulo turned to TikTok, which proved to be a turning point for him. With the help of Isabel Quinteros Annous, the head of artist relations, and a collection of well-produced humor videos, Derulo now boasts 51.6 million followers, making him the 14th-most-followed account on the platform. Additionally, his 2020 single “Savage Love” reached the number one spot in various countries, thanks to the app’s immense popularity. Derulo’s renewed fame resonated with a new generation of fans who were unfamiliar with his earlier successes, although not with Usher.

Following his TikTok success, Derulo signed a deal with Atlantic Records last year. The financial benefits of TikTok are also substantial, with estimates suggesting that an account of Derulo’s magnitude could earn around $75,000 in advertising income per video. However, the artist claims that his earnings far exceed that figure.

Regardless of what one may think of Derulo’s eccentric videos, which have featured him eating corn from a power drill and even shaving off his eyebrow, his bank account is likely flourishing.

Although the Florida native already owns a $3 million mansion in the distant Tarzana area of Los Angeles, recent records indicate that he purchased another nearly-new property in Encino for $3.6 million. In December 2020, the property was sold to a non-famous buyer for $3.3 million. However, the new owner quickly sold it again. The house was relisted six months later, and it took Derulo an additional eight months to purchase it. The listing photos show that the previous owner has long vacated the premises, as the interiors appear mostly unstaged and nearly empty.
