Artist Jacques Majorelle had a passionate love for plants in the Moroccan region after settling in the red land of Marrakesh. He began building the Majorelle Garden in the late 1920s. The highlight of the garden is the blooming water fountain filled with water lilies, alongside the Moorish-style villa, creatively designed by architect Paul Sinoir in 1931 while working in his top-floor workshop. The blue color of the villa is inspired by the color of the Atlas water, a term that refers to a specific color. It is a unique and recognizable color, showcasing the natural beauty within contemporary architectural structures.
Jacques Majorelle was a plant enthusiast, and the garden itself is an impressive painted canvas that depicts the most authentic portrayal of plants—not just ordinary trees and grass but also rare flowers in vibrant shades of green from the mainland. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé fell in love with the garden at first sight during a trip to Marrakesh in 1966. They decided to purchase the garden and the villa in 1980. “The garden quickly became familiar to us, and we went there every day. Although it had been previously announced to the public, very few people knew about it. We were immediately captivated by this oasis because Matisse’s colors harmoniously blended with the nature here”…”And when we learned that the garden was about to be sold and replaced by a hotel, we did everything we could to prevent it. That’s why we became the owners of the garden and the villa. And for many years, we brought life back to the garden. ” Pierre Bergé wrote in his book Yves Saint Laurent, Une Passion marocaine”.
The couple decided to reside in the artist’s villa, which was renamed “Jardin Majorelle.” Inspired by the vibrant colors of the villa, Yves Saint Laurent created a collection that fully embraced the colors of the villa itself.
Nowadays, the villa and garden are visited by a large number of tourists when they come to Marrakesh. The Majorelle Garden also serves as the Berber Museum on the top floor of Jacques Majorelle’s workshop. It showcases the private collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, as well as some temporary exhibitions by both of them.
