Volkswagen predicts that SUVs will soon disappear from the face of the earth
The era of streamlining put an end to tall automobiles such as the Ford Model T, but as soon as consumers realized that taller vehicles made ingress and egress simpler and could transport more people and cargo without compromise, the SUV and crossover era exploded.
Nevertheless, VW’s design chief Klaus Bischoff told Auto Express that the current SUV craze may succumb to market and vehicle changes.
Bischoff’s projection doesn’t reflect customer desire. Instead, it’s developing automobile technology. Bischoff believes driverless technology will kill the SUV.
Level Five vehicles may travel without a driver.
Thus, designers may eliminate windshields and front-facing seats and experiment with the car’s design. Bischoff calls the SUV a dinosaur after the move.
“Maybe SUVs will start to look old at some point and people will point at them and say, ‘He’s driving a dinosaur,’” he added.
