Lauryn Hill’s NJ mansion, at risk of foreclosure due to nearly $1 million in tax debt, reflects its high value

Fugees Singer May Lose Mansion Due To Unpaid Taxes
Lauryn Hill has severe tax issues again.

The Fugees singer has defaulted in a foreclosure action for almost $1 million in delinquent taxes on her New Jersey property, BOSSIP has discovered.

Rothman Realty LLC sued the hip-hop star late last year to repossess her suburban property after buying the tax certificate.

According to court filings acquired by BOSSIP, Hill failed to pay property taxes in 2003, and plaintiff Rothman Realty LLC purchased the tax lien and started paying the payments, which totaled $993,901 as of April 2018.

The “Killing Me Softly” singer never replied to the foreclosure petition, so Rothman Realty persuaded a judge to legally foreclose the house, court records indicate. The realty corporation wants Hill gone and full control of the home.

According to court filings, the residence will be auctioned at Sheriff’s auction to repay Rothman Realty.

According to public records, Hill acquired the 5,000-square-foot South Orange house for $430,000 in 1997, during the height of her Fugees success. The half-acre property is valued $1.06 million.

The singer had tax issues before. Hill spent three months in federal prison for tax evasion in 2013. We exclusively reported last month that Hill sued her cousin Gerald Hill for a $65,000 debt he never repaid.

Hill’s counsel refused comment. Rothman Realty was contacted for comment.
