Project MED: De Basto Design Unveils Cutting-Edge Concept with an Innovative “Suspended” Glass Superstructure

De Basto Design, the studio of designer Luiz De Basto, has presented a 92-metre superyacht concept with a first-of-its-kind illusory superstructure.

The design concept is based on the Mediterranean way of life and is distinguished by a reflective, nearly floating superstructure and an entirely open main deck dubbed the Agora deck. The name derives from Ancient Greece and refers to a public square or marketplace used for socializing.

De Basto envisioned the main deck as an expansive, multi-purpose social space where visitors can meet, dine, and lounge, shaded by a polished glass superstructure that “floats” above the water and reflects the surrounding environment. The openings and ports of the hull are covered with serigraphy of the same color as the hull, rendering them virtually invisible from the exterior.

Luiz de Basto stated, “I wanted to strip the profile of anything superfluous, leaving just the right number of elements to convey the concept.” “The volume of the flying superstructure touches the hull delicately, dissolving the main deck into void space and leaving the Agora deck open.”

Below the Agora open deck, inside the hull, are two open-layout private platforms.

Although the design is conceptual, it has been approved by the team at Lateral Naval Architects, who designed the superstructure’s structural lattice system so that it can have a small footprint and rely on only four supports. De Basto added, “We are not only interested in proposing an innovative profile; we can make the design more traditional or contemporary based on the client’s preferences.”

“We designed this initiative for individuals who are inquisitive about life, courageous and want to create their own space. “Instead of designing a conventional yacht and making it functional, we have rethought what it means to live on board for them,” he added.
