If protagonist Wars took place on the seven seas, Yeojin Jung’s concept for the Estrella superyacht would be the protagonist. This is because the youthful South Korean designer’s extravagant vessel has a tri-hull design that resembles a waterborne Y-Wing fighter.

During her final year of study at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, Jung conceived the magnificent concept that won Bronze at this year’s A’ Design Award and Competition. Jung’s competition entry for a vessel measuring 342 feet in length and 46 feet in main beam incorporates a “tri-swath” design inspired by classic cantilever architecture. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional, offering passengers a more immediate and visual experience of the water.

The design divides the vessel into three main sections: a central segment and two floater components on each side, all connected by a bridge that spans the hull. This gives each of the 20 passengers on the yacht more freedom than on a conventional yacht, allowing them a greater “understanding” of their surroundings.

There are equilibrium issues with the three-part design, but Jung has a solution. Fin stabilisers will be installed on the boat’s central hull to prevent any swaying that may occur on the water. Other technical features include an aluminium hull and a hybrid diesel engine. It will also have a cruising speed of 15 knots, which is not incredibly rapid but should be adequate for cruising.

“Estrella will present the next generation of superyachts for ultra-high-net-worth individuals,” said Jung in a statement. “By dividing the wing hulls into three volumes, this design provides a dynamic experience for passengers. By providing varying perspectives of the Mediterranean Sea, the environs are perceived. Additionally, its innovative layout can create a close relationship with nature.

Will the Jung’s tri-hull yacht ever be manufactured? That’s difficult to predict. But the designer’s award profile implies she could be formidable force in yacht design for years to come. With any luck, this design will pique the interest of a builder, and we will see her bring the Estrella, or something very similar, to reality.
