The 1992 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Convertible Works Turbo Look owned by the late Diego Maradona is scheduled to be auctioned off in March, which is likely to pique the interest of football aficionados who are also car enthusiasts.
This will be the first time the vehicle is offered at auction, which may have something to do with the recent passing of the football icon. Maradona received the 911 when he relocated to Seville after failing Italian football league substance tests. However, as soon as he arrived in Spain, he rented a famous bullfighter’s villa and ordered an automobile.
It is propelled by a 3.6-liter, air-cooled flat-six engine that generates 250 horsepower. It was a supercar in its day, with a top speed of 160 mph, and Maradona drove it like one. The police famously halted him for running a red light and driving 110 miles per hour in the city.
Indeed, Maradona’s year at Seville would be characterised as much by his behaviour off the pitch as by anything else. He departed Spain after a single disappointing year and sold his car to a resident of Majorca, which became widely known as his “lost season.”
Since then, it has been owned by several collectors, with the most recent acquiring it in 2016. It has been driven with 75,000 miles on the odometer, but according to Bonhams, it is largely original and in excellent condition.
The manager of European auctions for Bonhams, Paul Darvill, remarked, “We are delighted to present this iconic 1990s Porsche with its colourful and unique provenance, which will appeal to many football enthusiast collectors worldwide.”
It is expected to garner between €150,000 and €200,000 ($180,000 and $240,000 USD). It will not be known until the auction begins whether divine intervention will cause the price of the item to increase. The automobile will be sold at the March 3-10 Les Grandes Marques du Monde à Paris auction.
