State of Craft intends to launch the world’s first superyacht with a shark motif.
Last Thursday, the multidisciplinary design studio unveiled a new concept inspired by the beauty and strength of the Mako shark. Mako is a 394-foot-long, silver-hulled, long-range explorer that resembles its namesake in appearance.
Daniel Goldberg, the principal and founder of State of Craft, told Robb Report via email, “The efficiency and beauty of the sleek, sculptural shapes of Mako sharks were an early inspiration for the concept.” “I desired that the hull and superstructure, as well as the interior and exterior spaces, be tightly integrated into a single volume with a continuous surface.”
The ice-class expedition vessel is also at the forefront of environmentally friendly design. The vessel is envisioned to be equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, electric engines, batteries, and solar panels, allowing it to navigate the seas without emitting carbon dioxide. This should make Mako’s shark peers pleased. (At this time, performance specifications have not been disclosed.)
The spacious interiors eschew conventional right angles in favor of curved lines and sloping walls. Obviously, the layout can be modified to suit the requirements of commercial organizations or private explorers. Standard, however, is a double-height, light-filled space dubbed the Studio at the heart of the vessels. With its expansive windows and luxurious seating, it resembles a floating living room.
Outside, the cantilevered aft deck arcs around the hull of the yacht to provide seafarers with panoramic 270-degree views while suspended above the water. Elsewhere aft are a large recessed seating area or “island,” a spacious beach club, and a tender garage.
Pavilion is an additional attraction of Mako. This multipurpose space, suspended above the upper deck and protected by movable, perforated screens, could be used as a sky observatory, panoramic lounge, fitness studio, or yoga space. Obviously, the yacht also has a swimming pool and a helipad.
State of Craft, which has facilities in both London and Ottawa, has worked on a variety of residential developments and private residences over the past ten years. This is the company’s first venture into superyacht design. It’s surely not a terrible debut effort.
