Hydrogen-Powered ‘Flying Boat’ Glides Above Water, Accommodating 13 Passengers

The phrase “flying boat” may seem like an oxymoron, but a Swiss startup is prepared to prove otherwise.

The Jet ZeroEmission will reportedly launch the world’s first hydrogen-powered flying watercraft in Dubai next year. The startup has collaborated with Zenith Marine and DWYN to construct the new zero-emissions vessel, aptly named the Jet.

The yacht, which will have a futuristic, spaceship-like appearance, will measure approximately 33 feet from bow to stern and is designed to transport up to 12 passengers and a captain. As its name suggests, it can also fly like an aircraft.

The Jet’s hydrofoils will effectively elevate it three feet out of the water, resulting in less resistance than a typical planing boat. Since you are flying above choppy waters, foiling also makes for a smoother voyage with less wake.

The Jet’s propulsion is similarly innovative. It will be outfitted with two hydrogen fuel cells that will power the electric actuators for emission-free, emission-free, and swift travel. According to the Swiss company, the Jet’s takeoff speed will be around 18 knots and its cruise speed will be between 35 and 40 knots. According to the brand, it will focus primarily on servicing hotels and upscale clients.

It is important to note that combining hydrofoils with hydrogen is not precisely a novel idea. There has been an explosion of designs that incorporate this cutting-edge technology. In fact, Emirates Team New Zealand is constructing a foiling chase boat propelled by hydrogen to assist the AC75 racing yachts in the 37th America’s Cup.

Nonetheless, Jet ZeroEmission is gaining significant momentum. The company, managed by renowned yachtsman Alain Thébault, has already secured a portion of the necessary $11.4 million (€10 million) in funding. Thébault also offers an abundance of experience to the project. In 2009, the Frenchman designed and built a hydrofoil trimaran named L’Hydroptère, with which he set a world sailing speed record. As expected, he is enthusiastic about his new endeavors.

“We are pleased to make this announcement from Dubai and to be able to manufacture and launch ‘The Jet,’ the world’s first boat to sail without noise, waves, or emissions,” said Thébault in a statement.

In November 2023, the Jet is scheduled to make its maiden voyage during the COP28 UAE climate conference in Dubai.
