Unveiling the Game-Changing Hydrogen-Powered Catamaran Concept for Limitless, Zero-Emissions Cruising

This may be the age of electric superyachts, but the time of the hydrogen catamaran is rapidly approaching due to an influx of innovative ideas. Ruma Design has recently entered the competition with a ship.

The Spanish company has designed a new multihull propelled by hydrogen that can circumnavigate the globe sustainably. The 180-foot vessel, named Migma, which means “mixture” in Greek, combines traditional marine architecture with cutting-edge propulsion.

On board the cat are a liquid hydrogen storage tank, lithium-ion batteries, PEM fuel cells, and two electric motors. Theoretically, this configuration would allow the ship to traverse vast distances without producing any commotion, emissions, fumes, or vibrations. Similar hybrid systems have already been deployed on the open ocean. The Energy Observer, a converted ocean-racing catamaran, concluded a 5,000-nautical-mile transatlantic journey from France to the Caribbean using a hydrogen fuel cell and solar power last year. In addition, marine titans such as Lürssen, Sinot, and Alva Yachts have all announced the development of hydrogen-powered vessels.

The futuristic appearance of Migma consists of a streamlined silhouette and a silver exterior. The contemporary interior features high-end, minimalist furnishings and floor-to-ceiling glass. The vessel has a large convertible space at its core that can be used as either a central saloon or a meeting room for conducting conferences at sea, making it ideal for both business and leisure.

There are two spacious staterooms with en suite bathrooms and electrochromic smart glass walls facing the ocean. This allows you to appreciate the view or switch to privacy-enhancing pitch-black glass. In addition to the required crew accommodation, the vessel can be outfitted with additional staterooms.

Ruma claims that every space onboard provides panoramic views in every direction and maximises natural light. Outdoors, there is a substantial quantity of decking, an infinity pool, and a swim platform in the stern.

Although Migma is currently just a concept, it demonstrates that future yachts may be propelled by hydrogen.
