Though he famously references the exclusive community of Hidden Hills on his song “Butterfly Effect,” it seems Houston-born rapper, reigning sneaker tycoon and Fortnite record-smasher Jacques Webster — better known as Travis Scott — would rather live in L.A.’s Brentwood neighbourhood, where he’s dropped $23.5 million on a colossal hilltop house with panoramic views over the entire city, and where some of his nearest neighbours include LeBron James and Petra Ecclestone.
Designed and constructed on spec by the father-daughter team of De Loren & Associates, the 16,700-square-foot mansion features seven bedrooms and eleven restrooms on three floors of ultra-modern living space. But unlike most other contemporary mansions, the home’s architecture is not a typical lego-like box; rather, it is wrapped in smoothly curved sheetmetal intended to evoke “a modern yacht,” according to listing materials.
According to property records, the home was initially listed last summer with a $42 million price tag, but underwent two significant price reductions and a change in real estate agents before Scott purchased it for $23.5 million in cash. Despite being a substantial reduction from the original asking price, this is one of the largest transactions recently signed in L.A.’s luxury real estate market, which has been severely impacted by coronavirus-induced chaos.
The house is situated at the end of a semi-remote cul-de-sac and is completely invisible from the road. The driveway slopes steeply down onto the home’s roof, where there is parking for a dozen or more vehicles, and then further down into the mansion’s dark bowels, where there is a 20-car “auto gallery” garage.
Guests are greeted by a floor-to-ceiling walnut sculpture designed by master Japanese carpenter Toshi Kawabata, which stands opposite a 12-foot “green wall” that serves as a natural air purification. Beyond that, a completely open main level features a single great room with a bar, fireplace, and various seating and dining areas, as well as an adjacent kitchen outfitted with opulent black marble and Gaggenau appliances.
The home’s lower level is dedicated solely to recreation and entertainment, with a gym, a sauna, a 15-seat theatre, a sizable wet bar area and a glass-enclosed, temperature-controlled wine closet that reportedly stores up to 650 bottles. And tucked directly beneath the outdoor pool is the property’s game area, which is currently furnished with a designer-made table tennis table.
The penthouse floor is comprised of two junior master suites, one of which will likely be claimed by Scott Webster’s daughter, Stormi Webster, and a hedonistic owner’s suite with dual wardrobes, a spa bath, and a balcony with panoramic views of Los Angeles.
Despite clinging perilously to the side of a nearly vertical cliff, the home has ample outdoor entertaining areas and all the necessary recreational amenities. There is an outdoor kitchen, poolside cabana, alfresco dining decks, and a 75-foot infinity pool that functions as the hit song’s triumphant coda.
Scott’s current residence is a $13.5 million mansion in the Benedict Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles, which he and his ex-girlfriend Kylie Jenner continue to co-own. However, given his Brentwood upgrade and Jenner’s move to her new $36.5 million Holmby Hills estate, it seems highly likely that the couple will soon attempt to sell their no-longer-needed “starter” home.
