Unleashing the Solar Express: A Revolutionary 130m Concept Empowering with 1,500sqm of Solar Panels

The design firm M51 has unveiled a 130-foot superyacht concept covered with over 1,500 square feet of solar panels.

Appropriately titled Solar Express, the exterior features a massive “narwhal-tusk” inspired spike at the bow.

The designer of the concept, Anthony Glasson, stated, “Taking inspiration from steam trains, Solar Express is an attempt to create a greener future for large superyachts.”

Solar panels on the concept’s foredeck, sundeck, and stern combine with storage batteries and generators to power the yacht’s aboard electrical systems.

The lightweight aluminium hull of Solar Express, combined with the use of lightweight materials throughout the vessel, reduces the vessel’s weight and enables a larger battery capacity. A hybrid propulsion system composed of a pair of Azipods and electric generators also aids in reducing emissions.

According to Glasson, the concept’s 5,260GT is a relatively small volume for a 130-meter yacht, allowing for more space for solar panels and smaller interior areas that require less air conditioning.

Glasson acknowledges that sacrifices were made during the design process in order to produce the eco-friendly concept. This concept is for the owner who is willing to sacrifice some conventional superyacht features, such as helipads and sundecks, to make room for solar panels.

Solar Express offers a variety of amenities typical of luxury yachts, including a 10-meter-long swimming pool, a hot spring, and al fresco dining on the main deck.

The accommodation is located on the upper deck, with two VIP cabins overlooking the aft deck and featuring expansive views of the ocean.
